About our Meta-judges:

Lead Judge: Heather Davis

Completing her 40th year as an elementary teacher Heather has been an international teacher for the past decade. She spent eight years teaching Year 5/Grade 4 and then Year 4/Grade 3 at an international school in Beijing where she was first introduced to the Flat Classroom projects. She had the opportunity to lead her Grade 3 class in the A Week in the Life pilot project and has been a strong supporter of all of the projects in the following years. Becoming a Flat Connections Certified Teacher was a wonderful experience where she has been able to apply the concepts to many projects. One of the important side effects of the course has been the opportunity to continue the teacher online friendships that were started during the pilot project and teacher training. Attending the conferences in both Doha, Qatar and Beijing opened up an even better understanding of the importance of building bridges across cultural lines. While the students were definitely and culturally diverse they were the same in many more ways with the same desires, hopes and dreams. Two years ago Heather left China to begin two years as the Technology Integration Specialist for Grades 2-5 in Guatemala City. At the moment she is in the process of packing her bags to go home and visit family in Canada for a few weeks before returning to the classroom in Hanoi, Vietnam.

In seventeen years of international experience, Adam has traveled, taught, worked and studied in over eighty countries. After graduating from the University of Michigan in 1996, he began traveling the world. In the years since, he obtained his Masters in International Affairs from George Washington University, received a Fulbright Scholarship in Spain, wrote travel guidebooks, served as intern with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and launched several humanitarian projects. He founded the Cause & Affect Foundation in 2009 and has been assisting well-run local projects on four continents through his "micro-philanthropy" model. In recent years, he has delivered motivational speeches to schools, conferences and universities about his efforts to combine social activism and education. He has pursued education in order to instill global citizenship in his students. He is currently teaching English in a public high school in Kagoshima, Japan and will be teaching middle school social studies at Schutz American School in August, 2014.

Co-Judge: Yvonne Caples

Yvonne is the Curriculum Integration Specialist at Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh, North Carolina. She helps teachers integrate technology and provides technology training to staff and students. Yvonne Caples began her experience with the Flat Connections Projects in 2009 when she had her students take part in the Flat Classroom project. After her first experience with the project, she was hooked and continued to have her students participate in the Flat Classroom Project for several years making it an integral part of the curriculum for the courses she taught. She has acted as a judge for the Global Youth Debates and completed the Flat Classroom Certified Teacher Program in 2012. She served as Co-teacher and Community Builder for the Flat Classroom Certified Teacher Program in the Spring of 2013. In the Fall of 2013, Yvonne became the All Project Coordinator for the Flat Connections Projects. She currently works in Raleigh, North Carolina as a Curriculum Integration Specialist at Saint Mary’s School.

Congratulations to all the participants. I was so impressed with the quality of the videos that I watched as part of the Meta Judge duties.

The final 6 (winners of each theme) were excellent and the decision was very difficult. I have watched the videos over and over....

So here is the final decision - there was only one point between 1st and 2nd and then 2nd and 3rd.
